Lüderitz will feature a new tourist attraction when the second phase of the N$230m Lüderitz Waterfront Project is completed in August 2014. The project will see the old power station building, a National Heritage Monument located directly on Lüderitz Bay, being converted into Africa's largest Maritime Museum, as well as Namibia's most modern technical college. The Maritime Museum is expected to be a major drawcard for international tourists.
Bruno de Comarmond, Marketing Manager for Lüderitz Nest Hotel, says: “The Maritime Museum will offer the visitor a plethora of information, images and artefacts on the rich maritime history of Lüderitz and the Namibian coast. There will be a restaurant, cafés, outdoor terraces and a marina.”
The Lüderitz Waterfront Development Company (LWDC) CEO, Fluksman Samuehl, was quoted in local newspapers as saying the development would change the face of Lüderitz. “The second phase represents an intensive economic transformation programme spearheaded by the LWDC with the support of the government.”
