SAFE Travel, a website run by the New Zealand government, has warned New Zealanders of the risks in travelling to several African countries, among them South Africa, Kenya, Zambia and the DRC. The website says crime is serious in these countries and it poses serious risks to travellers’ security and that tourists should be vigilant when travelling in public areas. Tourists are advised not to travel to the north-eastern part of the DRC because of unrest. Since Zambia borders with the DRC, travellers to that country are at risk because of possible cross-border raids. Other safety advice includes being cautious of Durban, Kruger Park and Zambia due to a high incidence of carjackings. In Kenya, tourists are advised of murders and violent assaults on foreigners, as well as the continuous risk of terrorism. The website says that Cape Town’s Table Mountain should be visited in groups to lessen the risk of attacks and tours to townships should be avoided unless the tour is organised by a reputable company.
