Online surfing takes on new meaning

A SOUTH African Website, Wavescape, dedicated to the local surfing culture, has launched an online surf store selling a variety of products relating to the sport. The surfing engine which provides a directory of surf spots, a range of travel information, news, travel stories, an interactive chat and discussion board and a surf report advisory, aims to promote South Africa as one of the world's top surfing destinations. Says Steve Pike, editor of Wavescape: "Much of the overseas interest comes from homesick expats who become nostalgic about what's happening at home. We also have a large database of more than 500 South African slang terms, which many expats show off to their foreign friends to illustrate the humorous side of the SA surf culture." He added that the site also offered an e-commerce facility. (Miguel de Sousa)
