THE opening of the popular Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail in Namibia has been postponed for the second time this year, due to the floods experienced during the rainy season and the fact that the water level of the Fish River is still at such a high level that no hiking can yet be allowed in the river bed. Tim Parkhouse, general manager: operations of the Namibia Wildlife Resorts, stated that the situation would be reviewed again later this week and that a statement would be issued in respect of a new opening date for the hike. The hiking trail normally opens on April 15 every year and closes on September 15. People affected by this decision can either rebook for a later date, or claim their advance payment back. The Ai-Ais Hot Spring Resort at the southern end of the canyon, which has been flooded three times this season, partially opened its doors on April 19. It was initially scheduled to open on March 10. Due to the fact that many of its facilities have not yet been repaired, visitors staying at the resort will receive a discount of 50% on accommodation till all repairs have been finalised. It is expected that this will happen some time in July. (Hennie Fourie)
