The majority of respondents to our latest poll appear to be reaping the fruits of a strong reported surge in tourist arrivals for South Africa and the broader Southern and East African region.
A total of 49% of respondents said official reported figures – including a more than 25% year-on-year increase in overseas arrivals for South Africa in August – are reflected in the performance of their tourism businesses.
However, a significant proportion (42%) said the reported surge is not reflected in the performance of their businesses. The remaining 9% responded “Unsure”.

The EU’s proposed Green Claims Directive aims to combat greenwashing by requiring companies to substantiate environmental claims with scientific evidence and have them verified by an independent third party. While the directive’s initial implementation date of June has been delayed, the EU Commission has confirmed it remains committed to its finalisation.
As recently pointed out by sustainability strategist Melissa Foley, properties and other suppliers who cannot back up their sustainability claims are at risk of contravening the new regulations – in turn risking the continued support of critically important European markets.
