PDIs design World Summit furniture

OVER the last four weeks 28 different small enterprises from all over South Africa and 45 community sewing groups have pulled together for the World Summit to showcase the best of South African small business. The Legacy Project has been spearheaded by the Tourism Enterprise Programme (TEP), funded by the Business Trust and managed by Ebony Consulting International. Earlier this year the Johannesburg World Summit Company (Jowsco) appointed TEP to facilitate the procurement of all soft furnishings and fittings for the UN Secretariat to be housed at the Sandton Convention Centre. This effectively involved providing furnishings for the 240 United Nations offices, five ministerial offices and all furnishings for the Heads of State Lounge. Everything from desks, chairs and tables to notepads were sourced from historically disadvantaged enterprises (HDE). In addition to the HDE involvement, communities and individuals were enlisted and organised to produce 4 000 uniforms for volunteers as well as specially embroidered jackets for the VIP Protection Unit of the SA Police Service. Post Summit, TEP has undertaken to distribute the multi-functional furniture, decoration, fittings and soft furnishings procured amongst identified communities, schools and clinics in accordance with the memorandum and articles of association of Jowsco.
