THE huge oil tank farm that has been an eyesore at Port Elizabeth's harbour is to be moved in order to open up the area for other developments - including tourism. The tanks are to be relocated at the Coega Industrial Development Zone area, 22km east of the city. Announcing the move this week, Portnet's chief executive, Siyabonda Gama, said the existing E Cape port would be promoted as a tourist port as well as a cargo terminal for the shipment of vehicles and other commodities. Gama did not give any indication of what tourism activity he thought would take place but a multi-purpose development called Moreton Bay has already begun on an adjoining property. The proposed move has been given no time-frame though a "well-placed" source indicated it may only take place in "a good few years' time", when the development of Coega, the new-deep water industrial harbour, is under way.
