The R43 between Hawston and Fisherhaven has been shut down due to local protests over housing. The situation is tense and tyres are being burned at the side of the road.
The Overstrand Municipality told Tourism Update that law enforcement officials were at the scene and redirecting traffic to the alternative route via Hemel en Aarde/Caledon. “Police are on the scene ensuring the safety of all concerned,” said the Municipality, “and the Deputy Mayor, councillors, and officials, are at the scene to speak to people.”
The R43 connects Ceres with Gansbaai via Worcester, Botrivier and Hermanus.
The Municipality is working with the local Hermanus Community Policing Forum to manage the situation.
