ZAMBIA'S National Airport Corporation (NAC) has budgeted around R246m (US$22m) to upgrade safety features at the country's two major international tourist airports. NAC managing director, Chileshe Kapwepwe, said the bulk of the money (around R224m) would be used to install a modern radar system at Lusaka International Airport to improve traffic air control and make bad weather landings possible. The remaining R22m is already being used to renovate runways, and upgrade runway lighting at Lusaka and the popular Livingstone International Airport near the Victoria Falls. The two airports are Zambia's major points of entry, with dramatic increases in tourist arrivals at Livingstone since political turmoil knocked the bottom out of the international tourist industry in neighbouring Zimbabwe.
