ACCORDING to Ntau Letebele, spokesman for ArriveAlive, “90% of road accidents in South Africa are caused by people who disobey the law and 50% by those driving under the influence of alcohol.” To overcome the problem Hennie Marais and some associates have introduced an automated ‘RoadRage Hotline’ where any traffic violation can be reported as and when it occurs. “By building profiles of drivers the rogues can be identified and dealt with before they can cause further loss of life. Consequently our roads will become safer to use for everyone concerned and with huge cost saving implications,” says Marais. No subscription fee is required to participate in the ‘RoadRage Hotline’ project and calls will be charged at normal cell phone rates (free minutes are not applicable). Traffic violations can be reported on the RoadRage Hotline Number: 083 123 RAGE or 083 123 7243. The service comes at a good time as thousands of motorists head for the coast over the festive season. Over 1 200 people died on South African roads over the festive season last year. (Corin Baker)
