SAA best on first, slips on business

SOUTH African Airways has launched a world-class first-class seat modelled on the Swissair model. It reclines fully and is believed to be the widest in the world at 73,6cm. However, the airline's new business class seat is a poor orphan compared to British Airways' equivalent. Unlike BA, SAA's model cannot fully recline but has the potential to do so should demand warrant it. While SAA has the widest seat economy class seat pitch compared to most international competitors, it has reduced that from 86,36 cm to 79cm putting it on a par with British Airways. SAA's upper-deck economy class remains at the same pitch. SAA has apparently spent R600m upgrading its new product and includes new uniforms, décor and cuisine. (Mark Gray)
