SOUTH African Tourism, together with the nine provincial tourism authorities, launched the 2005 Sho’t Left campaign yesterday in Johannesburg. SA Tourism ceo, Moeketsi Mosola and SA Tourism’s portfolio manager: domestic marketing, Roshene Singh, both called on local operators to get involved in the campaign. “For us to prove that domestic travel is indeed affordable and do-able, we requested buy-in and support from local industry partners to come up with special packages to be showcased during this second phase of the initiative,” said Singh. “However, Sho’t Left is an ongoing campaign. The domestic market comprises 60% of tourism in South Africa contributing R47bn to the economy. It is important for the trade to realise that there is an enormous untapped potential for local travel all year round – so our call to them is that partnerships mean sustainable business. Create packages year-round and not just during specific campaign times,” she said. (Lucy Siebert)
