According to a recent study by mydatingadviser.com, South Africa is ranked among the top 20 best LGBTQ+ travel destinations in the world.
The key factors determining the most gay-friendly travel destinations included:
- Social acceptance
 - Sexual activity rights
 - Civil union rights
 - Marriage rights
 - Adoption rights
 - Military service rights
 - Existence of anti-discrimination laws
 - Existence of gender identity laws

These were given a corresponding number of points, and, based on their laws, each destination could achieve full, half, or no points, which were then combined to create a 100-point scale for an LGBTQ+ Travel Index Score. A score of 100 would represent the most gay-friendly destination.
