Table Mountain muggers arrested

A TOTAL of six suspects have been arrested in two weeks on Table Mountain in connection with a spate of muggings that have taken place in the park.

Five were arrested in connection with incidents around Skeleton Gorge and one on the Tafelberg Road.

Paddy Gordon, operations manager for the northern section of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), says the arrests came as a result of the park’s crime-fighting strategy. “We spent the past three weeks on an intensive recce of the vulnerable areas, to profile suspects and to understand their modus operandi. During this exercise, paths and escape routes were identified in areas not used by the public.”

Gordon says the information gathered should lead to further arrests in the near future. “The message we want to send out is that crime on Table Mountain does not pay.”
