TABLE Mountain is now number five in its category for the New7wonders of Nature Global Campaign. This follows campaign that generated high-saturation media coverage across national TV, radio, print and online media channels world-wide.
Table Mountain climbed up the global rankings this week, rocketing 24 places from its previous position of 29 last week. It is now officially ahead of mountains such as Mount Everest, K2 and Mount Kilimanjaro.
“We are really excited that our campaign is capturing the imagination of the SA public. Now we need to sustain interest in order to keep our rankings high until July 7,” says Sabine Lehmann, ceo of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.
The New7Wonders Foundation in Zurich, Switzerland, announced in January that Table Mountain was one of 261 natural sites from 222 countries to have made it through to the second round.
The new seven wonders will be determined by the voting public from around the globe.
Voting to select the top 77 sites runs until July 7. Thereafter, a panel of experts will select the 21 official finalists and announce them on July 21. The official new seven wonders of nature will be revealed in 2011 and the New7Wonder World Tour will visit these selected sites throughout 2010.
Those interested in casting their vote can visit www.new7wonders.com.
Other nominees in the Southern African region include the Kalahari Desert, the Great Rift Valley navigating through Kenya, Malawi, Ethiopia and Tanzania; Kafue National Park in Zambia; the Avenue of Baobabs in Madagascar and the Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Kalahari Desert is number one in its category but is at risk of losing its spot unless South Africa and Botswana add their official support.
