Tanzanian govt to appeal highway ruling

The Tanzanian Government is likely to appeal a court order declaring a proposed highway across the Serengeti National Park as unlawful.

The East African Court of Justice received notice of appeal in July 26. The court declared the proposed 53km super highway unlawful in a ruling on Friday, June 20.

The Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW), which filed lawsuit to prevent the construction of the highway in 2010, is opposed to the highway because it argues the highway negatively impact the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, by disrupt the annual wildebeest migration through the park. The network has also warned against increased poaching as a result of the super highway providing easier access to animals.

Conservationists have opposed the Tanzanian government’s plan to build this highway, while government representatives, such as the Tanzania National Roads Agency, have countered by indicating a positive effect on tourism and socio-economic development.
