Lion Roars is designing a greener, more ecologically responsible tourism product through its latest project, building new villas at The Robberg.
The first point on the green agenda was water consumption. Over the past couple of years, the Robberg area has experienced a severe drought. Local tourism has been called on to reduce water consumption and assist in preserving indigenous flora and fauna populations damaged by the drought.
In light of the reduction of water consumption, the new Robberg villas boast a range of indigenous, drought-resistant plants in the gardens. Lion Roars also designed a garden irrigation system that is independent of the Municipal water supply and functions on rainwater.
The company has further instituted a voluntary guest-driven system of laundry management, in which guests can choose to have their towels washed only when required. Similarly, guests can choose to have their linen changed every second day, rather than every day. In the rooms, a dual flush system has been installed on all new toilets, as well as water-saving shower heads.
The second item on the eco agenda was electricity consumption. Lion Roars installed heat pumps on all the geysers, which reduce electricity consumption per litre of hot water by nearly 70%. LED bulbs have been installed wherever possible and gas fires are used to warm up the lounges in winter.
Every room also has a wide range of power-saving features: inverter air conditioners, an eco-friendly motion sensor function, and in-room bar fridges have been reduced from 120 litres to 60 litres.
