Cape Town: Road closures & information for Festive Lights Switch-On
THE annual turning on of the Adderley Street Festive Lights takes place this Sunday, November 30, with Mayor Helen Zille performing the honours. This year boasts 12 brand new light installations offering a kaleidoscope of colour with a strong emphasis on the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Festivities kick off at 16h00 with a stage concert at the Heerengracht Fountain, featuring local stars such as Loyiso, Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels and Dozi. The lights will be officially switched on at 20h00.
A 2 000-strong carnival parade will move from the fountain up to Strand Street and will include brass bands, a fire engine with Santa Claus, dancers, giant puppets, stilt walkers, unicyclists, acrobats and floats including a 2010 FIFA World Cup host city float. There will also be a special musical tribute to the late musical legend Miriam Makeba. Two large screens will be strategically placed in Adderley Street to allow the expected 50 000 spectators to follow the action on stage. The show will be complemented by a laser light display which will be bounced off mirrors and buildings along the street. The Adderley Street lights will stay up until mid-January 2009.
