Knysna lagoon sewage problem resolved
TravelHub would like to update readers on an alert from October 31 “Sewage Leak at Knysna Lagoon”. The Knysna Municipality announced in a press release on Friday that the effluent overflow into the lagoon has been contained and that the latest water test results show that they once again meet the required standards of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Municipal Manager Johnny Douglas said: “We will continue to monitor the situation closely, particularly during the upcoming summer season to ensure that the water quality meets the required standards at all times."
According to Douglas, as an emergency solution the municipality had diverted most of the effluent water through the old works. "A tender was awarded yesterday to create a more permanent solution and the company will start work as soon as possible with the refurbishment of the wastewater treatment plant which includes the removal of the built-up sludge," said Douglas. "In terms of a long term solution, an Environmental Impact Assesment process has almost been completed for the future upgrade of the Knysna Waste Water Treatment works. This upgrading will be done in phases, and the next phase will be submitted in the next budget cycle.”
