TRAVELLERS' TIP: Namaqualand's spring flower spectacular

ONCE a year along the west coast of South Africa, the semi-desert area is transformed into a flower spectacular.

Seeds that lie dormant through drought conditions germinate after the winter rainfall and spread across the Namaqualand region. Wildflowers blossom over Piekenierskloofpass into the valley on the other side of the mountain at Citrusdal, up the coast to Springbok and further north to the Richtersveld.

The flowering season lasts for a short while between August and September.
