SHARKS and stingrays were moved from quarantine holding tanks at Durban harbour, in KwaZulu Natal, and Salisbury Island to their new home at uShaka Marine World, on Monday 29. By April 2, 30 sharks and rays will be in their new tanks and seven large sand sharks weighing between 80 and 130 kilograms will be also be moving into uShaka Marine World shortly. “Over and above the animals at the old Sea World we have been collecting more stock for our new tanks. The collection is a continuous process. We have a team of 30 aquarists and divers who take care of all the animals and will be involved in the move,” said Dr Mark Penning, director of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR). Some of the species at uShaka are among the largest in the world and it takes at least six men to move a shark from one tank to the next. (Lucy Siebert)
