Despite recent newspaper reports that Durban hopes to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, the city told Tourism Update it was yet to make a final decision on whether it would bid as there were several factors to take into consideration.
Deputy City Manager of Community and Emergency Services, Musa Gumede, said: “Whilst the 2022 Commonwealth Games remain an interest for Durban and the greater South African community, the City of Durban has not taken a firm decision on whether to bid for the games or not.”
During the recent Sports, Events and Tourism Exchange conference in Durban,
Municipality speaker, Loggie Naidoo, told newspaper reporters he hoped that the city’s facilities and experience in hosting international events would be advantageous to them in their bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He was quoted as saying: “We have world-class facilities that are supported by good infrastructure. We have our strategy, we want to be Africa’s city for sports, arts and culture and tourism.”
Cities interested in hosting the games must submit their proposals to the South African Sports Confederations and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) before 31 March 2014.
