THE WOMAD Festival (World of Music, Arts and Dance) will again be a cultural melting pot of musical talent from around the globe when the event kicks off tomorrow at the Bluegum Creek Estate in Benoni, Gauteng. The festival will, over a three-day period, host bands and acts from South Africa, Malawi, Mexico, Iran, Guinea, India, China, Senegal, Mali, Ireland, Argentina, Jamaica, Uganda, Bermuda and the UK. Some of the more well-known acts appearing include Joan Armatrading (UK), local bands Fetish and Tananas as well as AFRO Celt Sound System from Ireland. In addition to the live music on three stages, there will also be a programme of adult and children's workshops, arts and craft markets, and food and drink stalls offering international cuisine. An amusement park with various rides, carousels, cars and elephant rides will be supplemented by the Children's Village - an enclosed and secure area. The gates will open tomorrow at noon for campers only. Tickets are on sale through TicketWeb and can be purchased as a two-day pass (Saturday and Sunday entrance) for R150 or a single-day ticket for Sunday for R75. VIP tickets are also available.
