Zeitz Museum executive director resigns

Executive Director and Curator under investigation.

Mark Coetzee, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) in Cape Town, resigned on Thursday, May 17.

The museum had initiated an inquiry into Coetzee’s professional conduct and suspended him from his duties. His resignation came shortly thereafter. The reasons behind Coetzee’s suspension and resignation have not yet been revealed.

Zeitz MOCAA issued a statement on behalf of the trustees, saying that the Adjunct Curator, Azu Nwagbogu, has been approached to assume the role in the interim.

The Zeitz MOCAA project involved a R500m (€33.19m) redevelopment of an almost 100-year-old historic grain silo, which was originally part of an industrial shipping facility in Cape Town harbour. It opened its doors to the public in September 2017, promising to provide a platform for the exhibition of contemporary art from Africa.
