The R332 through Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape reopened to 4x4 vehicles on October 23.
The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) said the route closed due to flood damage earlier this year. Repairs have improved the condition of the main road but river crossings remain challenging with concrete causeways still awaiting repair or replacement.
Visitors using the route must travel in a convoy of at least two 4x4 vehicles, remain on the main road and follow instructions from reserve personnel. Access may be suspended at short notice if rainfall or river conditions compromise safe passage.
Repairs are continuing at the western gate with the gatehouse expected to operate from Friday, October 30. ECPTA said information pamphlets will be distributed at the gates while permanent signage is arranged.
The agency is working with the Department of Transport and local stakeholders to monitor conditions. Travellers are encouraged to confirm access and route arrangements directly with accommodation and activity providers before departure.
The wider Baviaanskloof region remains open to visitors while accommodation providers and other tourism businesses continue to welcome guests.
