CT tourism supports over 100 000 jobs

In 2024, domestic and international visitors to Cape Town directly supported over 106 000 jobs, accounting for 6.9% of total employment, according to a report released by the city.

The Economic Value of Tourism report additionally reveals that 2.4 million overnight tourists stayed in the city in 2024, injecting R24.5 billion (US$1.4 billion) into the economy through direct tourism spend and ripple effects across transport, accommodation, food, culture and attractions.

“The standout figure – one job is created or sustained for every 10 tourists – makes every booking a significant contribution to employment in Cape Town,” said CEO of Cape Town Tourism Enver Duminy.

The latest forecasts from travel intelligence company ForwardKeys predict a 4.6% year-on-year increase in international arrivals to the city for the remainder of the year, driven in particular by a 12.1% surge from the UK market.

New tourism development framework

James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, said the city will take the lead in launching a new tourism development framework when South Africa celebrates Tourism Month in September.

“This strategy will focus on growing volumes and value – attracting more arrivals while ensuring greater benefits for businesses and spinoffs in communities, ultimately creating more jobs for Capetonians,” said Vos.
